Husbands role is pregnancy weight gain?

Question: Husbands role is pregnancy weight gain?

(Posted by: on 2012-02-03 18:06:17)

I'm 25 and my wife is pregnant. We both have always been very fit, active and healthy eaters, but now that she is pregnant, she is afraid of gaining weight. To make it easier, she asked me to stop working out during the pregnancy and to indulge in her cravings as well so that I will gain weight too. The idea being that she won't feel so bad if I'm getting fat too. Should I do it to support her? Is it normal? If so, are there any guys out there who can tell me how much they had to gain?

Man, I could not do this. She can still do some exercises. Just support her but that does not mean you have to gain weight too.

With the right diet, pregnant women don't get "fat ". If she gets fat, it's because she's lazy and eating crap all day. A baby, placenta, and amniotic fluid all are gone when she gives birth. She will get some extra body fat, but she shouldn't turn into a whale. Don't support her in her weird idea.

This is silly. She should continue working out with you while she is pregnant and eating healthy foods in between her cravings. There's no reason she can't keep exercising during pregnancy; actually, she SHOULD. What she isn't thinking about right now is that she will lose a big chunk of her weight in the week following pregnancy, and the rest will follow if she returns to her healthy lifestyle after she has recovered. If she breastfeeds, she will lose weight even faster. However, it won't be as easy for you to drop the weight.

Being pregnant is not a license to blow up and stop exercising. She is not going to get fat unless she gets out of control. She's pregnant. Has the doctor told her to be inactive or on bed rest? It is not normal for her to think that everyone should be unhealthy during a healthy pregnancy. My husband stayed as he should have. Healthy.

Anything that makes your wife feel secure and loved during this time is the right thing. She will love and adore you for your selflessness... especially later after she is back to normal and her hormones are back in check. And, as silly as the request is, you can feel good knowing that you were her hero through this really tough time. Congratulations!!

Some women do gain some weight during pregnancy no matter what they do (pregnancy does strange things to a body), but as long as she eats healthy foods and continues exercising, she should be okay. Caving to the occasional craving won't hurt much. Asking you not to keep up your regimen is a little unfair (but then, pregnancy does funny things to the brain, too). Maybe you could change how you exercise. Walk with her. Low impact is good for her, and the fresh air will benefit you both. Edit: I forgot to mention this earlier. Go with her to her next OB/ GYN visit. You can discuss healthy weight gain and fitness with the doctor.
